Donkey Kong model sheet by glitcher Donkey Kong model sheet by glitcher
Another model sheet! This one is a commission for :iconran-blue:

Who doesn't love this big guy? The DKC series are some of my favourite platformers and I still play them even today. Since Donkey Kong is a 3D character to begin with, it's easier to imagine how his squat, bulky physique will look animated. As with my other model sheets, I did my best to keep the different viewpoints aligned and symmetrical for modelling purposes, although DK's hands look a little bigger in profile because of the perspective.

Glad to see it came in handy for more than one person. Is that where this came from?

In a way, yes and no... but technically yes LOL
I used various refs along, mainly yours on this one, when studying the basics: slashweilerdog.deviantart.com/…

Darn right! DKC2 was one of the best games on the SNES. I'd still play it if the console hadn't crapped out :P

Nice work translating the big ape to 2D!

What about emulation? It's the only way I play console games these days.

Certainly an option! I play a lot of older games on emulator. Just haven't quite found the right keyboard setup for games requiring the X/Y buttons. I'm a fumblefingers on the keyboard.

If you're right handed, many games that only use the keyboard assign the directional controls to the W A S D keys. As for the buttons, I like to use O P [ ] for Y B A X respectively on the SNES. It can get more fiddly if you need to use the shoulder buttons, but I have a USB adaptor that I can use to connect my Playstation or N64 controllers. Maybe you should get one of those.

Thanks for the tip. I'll give that a try. The USB adapter is a definite must if I ever emulate N64 games. Can't imagine trying to map that controller to a keyboard ><

Keep in mind that most N64 USB adapters don't support the Rumble Pak. There was a inexpensive adapter with rumble support called Adaptoid around ten years ago, but the company went under and all Adaptoid prices have skyrocketed. A more affordable alternative is from Raphnet, which can customise their USB adapters to virtually any console. I have a combined N64/GC adapter with rumble support. Even though I don't have a GC controller yet, I like to keep that option open in the future. Otherwise, there are plenty of cheapo adapters on eBay without rumble support.

Rumble Pak's not a big deal to me. Although...were there any games that actually needed it? I can't recall.

Well, you needed the Rumble Pak to use the Stone of Agony in Ocarina of Time to find hidden holes.

Did you know that the name "Donkey Kong" Wasn't intended to be his original name. When the first Donkey Kong game was translated into english, the translators make a mistake on the name. It was supposed to be Monkey King, not Donkey Kong, but the game became so famous, so fast that the name Donkey Kong was kept as it was so popular and distinctive.

That's not what I heard. It's true that's it's a translation error, but that's only because Shigeru Miyamoto mistook the word 'donkey' for 'stubborn'. I read about it in N64 Magazine.
