They Came... by glitcher They Came... by glitcher
This is my entry for the Operation Moonfall art contest to promote The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask. Not only is that my favourite game in the Zelda series, but it's my favourite game, period. I can think of no better way to express my love for Majora's Mask by painting one of my favourite scenes in the game: protecting Romani Ranch from an alien attack. Saving princesses be damned! Nothing says 'hero' like rescuing cute ranch girls from ghouls and marauders. Having said that, I always found it strange that Romani (NOT Malon!) cowers in the barn after practising all day shooting balloons with her bow. What was the point of that? After reading the spin-off Franco-Belgian comic "Louve", which features a gifted young Viking girl training to be an archer, I think having Romani team-up here would have been more memorable than just letting 'Grasshopper' do all the work. Oh, and notice how Epona is absent. Seriously, does anyone go riding around trying to shoot Them on horseback? I just camp in front of the barn with my trusty Hero's Bow.... until that one bugger sneaks around behind the house and scuppers my whole plan. :disbelief:

YOU CAN WATCH A VIDEO PLAYBACK OF THIS PAINTING HERE.

EDIT: This image won the grand prize of the Operation Moonfall contest! Everybody in the house say "Way-oh!" :winner:

It's worth going at it again!  You'll definitely enjoy it :)
I think it was the secrets they crammed in this game that made it so much worth playing- they never advertised that you could defend a farm from aliens!

Also great job on the picture, glitcher, it's definitely one of my favorite-favorites. lol

One of the creepiest scenes of the game for an 11-year old. Still give me chills. Amazing work!

Wow, I really love your work! And you also included the best spot to stop the aliens ^^ You also chose a very interesting angle - the aliens are especially terrifying when you only see their "claws" and the light from their eyes... I also like the inclusion of Romani and the dog! I like their expressions!

The barn? I just sat on top of the house and went Hawkeye on ET and his buddies. Best vantage point on the whole ranch as long as you were fast enough and had good aim.

Interesting strategy. What happens if They are behind the East side of the barn and you don't have a clear shot?

It's been a while since I booted teh game up, but as I recall my method for that situation was generally either "Don't lose the shot" or "Jump down, go around the back, shoot, return to roof".

I always loved this quest.  One of my favorites of all time.  It was intense with clear stakes, and meanwhile it was so different in tone from the game that it ruled!  This one really did make me feel like a hero.

I circle the barn constantly when I do this bit. The dog actually helped a surprising amount, warning me when a beastie got too close, and showing me where it was.

This picture is beautiful. o.o Congratulations of winning! :D You really deserve it. :)

And yeah, I think that Romani running into the barn was a pretty cheap move. She talks big about protecting her cows, but then she just runs inside and lets you do all of the work. So this is great perspective!
But...I did always use Epona. It was easy to just circle the house on her and not worry about the far-off aliens. I never thought about getting off, because I was addicted to riding her around everywhere.
Enough ranting! It's still good!:happybounce:

Thank ye's! I always thought Epona kinda became obsolete in lieu of the Goron roll. It was much faster and more enjoyable than Epona, and remains my favourite method of travel in a Zelda game to date.

This encounter was based off of two alien encounters in real life. The aliens are meant to resemble the Flatwoods Monster, and the style of the encounter suggests the Hopkinsville Goblin incident has some influence. Also, chances are, Romani's memories could be revived from hypnosis. Possibilities of what happened aboard the alien craft include(shudder) reproductive experiments ( [link], to speak to romani about the horrors of nukes(although nukes are null in the Zeldaverse), or even just a standard medical examination, like kids dissecting a frog, although perhaps more technologically advanced. Due to the nature of most cattle abductions, the aliens were most likely to use the cows for a medical reason of some sort.

I think the general inspiration of the alien abduction is fairly obvious to everyone, but the exact details of what Romani experiences when captured is left to the player's imagination. I hope to explore the issue in a future painting.
