Okay, this news is over two years old, but I only found out about it recently. Back in October 1999, Archie published Sonic Super Special #11, featuring the short story "Ascension" in which Sally undresses and merges with the Source of All to uncover her destiny like her father before her. When this story was reprinted in May 2012 in Sonic Select #5, Archie had taken a firmer stance on Sally's nudity and edited the pages so that she's wearing her vest. In fact, the vest is still coloured blue in the sepia panels as if to say, "Yes! She's got her vest on, readers!"

I discovered this by accident when I came across Sonic Select #5 in a comic shop and immediately spotted the change. My initial reaction was incredulous. Was this really necessary? It's not as if the vest really covers up Sally, but for some reason Archie believes this small item of clothing makes the comic more kid-friendly. I guess you could say this was a precursor to Sally's more conservative redesign after "Worlds Collide". So what do you think? Do you agree that the edit was for the best, or do you prefer the uncut version of "Ascension"? You can see a collage of the changes below.

Also, I've decided to share the inked version in case anyone wants to get some colouring practice with this. Feel free to have a go!

It wasn't until Sonic Sat AM Season 2 Sally was now wearing the blue vest jacket.

The vest I can get the logic behind. But the pants later make no sense.

Why is the vest logical? It doesn't conceal anything. :o

Without Vest: Sally your Nudist.
With Vest: Ok, Kid-Friendly enough.

This logic (or lack of it) is funny.

I’ve always found it funny that Sallys father is an ass hole that bathes in gold secritly...

If she loves sonic then let her I say to the king... 🐭

Nice job!

Forget poorly edited, the edits in the reprints don't even make narrative thematic sense.  Also, they didn't give her clothes in the first dozen and so issues.  Why was this an issue?  XD

It was a really unessacary change. But I like Sally's modern day design better because she looks more like a leader who's ready for action. I didn't really get that much when she's just wearing her vest.

Oh wow. I feel like things probably got weird once Sega had all the females in the games wear at least shirts. Plus some of the comic artists gave her breasts. Though if you think about it, the vest doesn't make much of a difference either. Idk.

In the beginning, she didn't have a vest at all. She just wore boots. She started wearing the vest in the first 48-page special "In Your Face".

I think comic artists need to decide whether they are drawing comic panels for all ages, or a series of pinups.

Agreed. Cartoon animals shouldn't need full human covering, but some pictures make them seem naked by detailing way too much (curves, bellybutton, etc). It also makes innocent pictures seem guilty because people then read too much into them

Thankfully, I have the original Sonic Super Special #11 comic issue.

Because I don't know much about or follow into whatever the Archie Sonic comic crew does nowadays.

Good grief. She's a freakin cartoon animal! Are we really getting more prudish as time goes one?  This is why we can't have nice things because sick people draw inappropriate sonic fan art and parents have to worry about their kids accidentally stumbling on that crap.  Why are animals being more sexualized as time goes on why?  Next thing you know they'll make pooh bear wear pants too.

Interestingly, this sort of censorship was the very reason why she got the iconic vest in the first place, during SatAM's 2nd season.

Apparently, people were still complaining way back then.

What makes you so sure of that? It's not as if there was any Internet back then for DiC to read fan feedback. Maybe they just included the vest for aesthetic reasons.

They received them through the mail. It's how most broadcast networks kept in touch with their viewers back then, before the internet made things easier.

I recall the information coming from a staff-member who worked on SatAM. The change was authorized due to either viewership complaints or (more likely) focus-group mandates.

Proof or it didn't happen. :unimpressed: Besides, what did the vest accomplish? It's as revealing then as it is in this submission, so it's pointless to include it on Sally. It seems more likely that it's just a design change.

There's no fox in Elias' heritage. King Max is a squirrel while Queen Alicia is a chipmunk. Sally has inherited more from her mother while Elias inherited more from his father, hence the longer tail.

So since people want to complain about her being "naked" and let Sonic and the rest of the guys get away with it just because they're guys, why aren't any of them complaining about Fifi la Fume from Tiny Toons or Slappy Squirrel from Animaniacs? They're both females and they walk around with no clothes on.

They didn't complain about Slappy Squirrel, but they certainly complained about the oversexualized Minverva Mink, hence her restricted appearances.

I sort of do and don't understand Archie Comics stance on this matter. The part I do understand is the fact it is sorta inappropriate to see something that closely resembles a human being being naked without clothes on and that could lead very young children down a not-so-pleasant road, so good thinking on Archie for that part. But the part that I don't understand is the fact that for people in the more mature audience for people 13 and up (preferably 16 and up because that's how old I am) will easily be able to understand why she has minimal clothing on because the fur that she is covered in mainly IS HER CLOTHING and doesn't need to be censored for mature audiences, therefore Archie Comics placing censorship on the scenes where Sally has no clothing on is pretty much redundant or unnecessary for people that are older and can comprehend why she is naked like so. The best decision for Archie Comics would be for them to release 2 (or maybe 3 different versions of certain comic issues depending on how old you are) and have them directed towards specific age groups of people and also saying content warnings and age restrictions for people of certain ages. Just a very meticulous thought I had in mind when I saw this. I hope you understand my thoughts. Good day.

Interesting idea. And what happens when all the youngin's ignore the sanitized comic in favour of the 'big kids' version with all the nudity, swearing and drug abuse? :o

That would be entirely up to the kid's parents. And why did have to put "swearing and drug" in there? There is not any of that in the Sonic the Hedgehog comics.

Well in a few Sonic Comics i have red they have said things like crud, but that's minor and it has only happened in about 2 or 3 comics before. so nothing much to gamble about.
